Who We Are MAGIC (Mid Atlantic Geothermal Industry Coalition) is a regional non-profit association advocating for the development of Geothermal Systems as a dependable, cost-effective, renewable resource for the Mid-Atlantic. We are all passionate about Geothermal Systems and their ability to make an immediate and significant reduction in energy from fossil fuels and carbon emissions.

3. Three successful kick-off meetings in the first year as an organization. Represented the geothermal industry at the M.E.A. Greenhouse Gas Reduction Plan meeting. MAGIC was appointed to the M.E.A.’s Thermal Energy Taskforce to represent the geothermal industry on TRECs. Testified and represented the industry in support of the 2014 TREC legislation. Worked closely with the Maryland-Delaware Water Well Association to coordinate a drive in to Annapolis to meet and greet law makers on the importance of geothermal legislation. 3

4. Spoke at the American Ground Water Trust’s Annual Geothermal Workshop in Maryland to discuss the creation of the MAGIC organization and political landscape of geothermal in Maryland. Presented at the Maryland-Delaware Water Well Association to apprise membership of various geothermal issues. Presented at the National IGSHPA Convention on the roles of local organizations, as well as the geothermal and political landscape. Presented at the 11 th Annual Cooperative Conference in order to exhibit the benefits of geothermal to electrical cooperatives. 4

The State Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard (RPS) is modified by establishing a Thermal Tier and Thermal Renewable Energy Credits (TRECs), an Alternative Compliance Payment (ACP) schedule for the thermal tier, with utility TREC obligations capped up to 2% of overall REC market. The bill also adds “woody-biomass”, a qualified and proven technology, as an eligible thermal energy source in the RPS thermal tier. Thermal energy technologies as additional sustainable sources of energy will benefit from the advantages of using Thermal Renewable Energy Credits to finance projects. 6

7. Creates drilling jobs that are desperately needed in the face of decreasing opportunities in the water well industry. Allows in-State thermal technologies to compete on their own rather than competing with millions of other RECs from the PJM region. Allows the State to balance an effective incentive with minimal ratepayer impact. Recognizes the dual traits of thermal energy, as an energy efficiency measure and renewable energy source. 7

8. Having a separate thermal tier targets in-State thermal sources without compliance issues with the federal Commerce Clause. Reduces electricity consumption from the grid, as well reducing direct consumption of fossil fuels, such as heating oil and natural gas. 8
