The Dutch East India Company ( ) is know to be the world’s first multinational company and the first to issue stock. They bought spices in South-East Asia and sold them in Europe.

Advantages of globalization
Easier to communicate with people around the world Easier to travel Cultural interchange International trade Better and cheaper products Improvement of new technologies The transport of the products is easier and faster Globalization creates a political and an economical connections, which helps countries to get along with each other more

Disadvantages of globalization
Companies move jobs overseas, creating unemployment in countries where the jobs originated The businessmen and the big companies are the only winners in globalization Exploitation of the workers in the developing countries – incl. children Sweatshops

Disadvantages of globalization
Money problems can easily be spread (ex. US recession, Greece) The mix of cultures can lead loss of national identity Small companies have to go out of business because they cant compete with the big international companies Gap between the poor and the rich people increases

Globalization Activity
You will be organizing yourselves into teams of 4 people, given 1 large sheet of paper and markers. You and your group members will be asked to answer one of the following five questions on the large sheet. This will then be presented in front of the class. How has globalization affected your life? Is globalization good for the world? What will globalization look like fifty years from now? Do you think globalization will make us all the same in the future? Which countries do you think like or hate globalization most?
