1
Monerans (Bacteria) 2 Kingdoms Archaebacteria & Eubacteria
2
Characteristics UnicellularProkaryotic Cell Wall Move or Float Freely Able to Photosynthesize Found just about EVERYWHERE / ANYWHERE
3
Archaebacteria Found in Hot Springs where scientists once thought “NO” other organisms could survive. 3 MAJOR TYPES MethanogensThermophilesHalophiles (methane producers) Responsible for swamp and marsh gas. “Heat Loving” Live in hot springs and near black smokers. (Sulfur vents in oceans) “Salt Loving” Live in saturated salt waters and salt crust. (Extreme salty areas: Salt Lake in Nevada & Salt Flat Areas in Australia) Some scientists think these type of organisms may be the kind of life forms we might find on other planets like Mars!!! Extreme Climates!!
4
Archaebacteria
5
Eubacteria Bacteria having a wide range of shapes, ranging from spheres to rods and spirals. Shapes CyanobaceriaAerobic BacteriaAnaerobic Bacteria Photosynthesis Able! “Blue Green Algae” Oxygen Based! Not Oxygen Based! Oxygen is deadly & kills ***Many infections in the mouth & body are this.***
7
Helpful Uses of Bacteria Breaks Down Nitrogen Decomposers NATURES RECYCLES Medicines (insulin) “Clean Up Toxins” Most bacteria are actually BENEFICIAL Stomach E. Coli Vitamin K Creates food such as cheese, pickles, yogurts, etc.
8
Harmful Bacteria Pathogen- disease causing organisms Pathogen- disease causing organisms Pathogenic Bacteria: Causes most food-borne illnesses Salmonella (poultry, eggs, meat) Escherichia coli (under cooked hamburger) Botulism produces a toxin (poison) Streptococcus pneumoniae Streptococcus & Staphylococcus Bacteria Infections Pneumoniae is so successful in making people sick because the bacteria makes a shield around it to prevent you from destroying it. Strept Throat Necrotizing Faciitis (flesh eating bacteria) Cellulitis, Impetigo, Boils (all skin infections)
9
Killing Bacteria Pasteurization- using high temperatures o kill bacteria. Pasteurization- using high temperatures o kill bacteria. Antibiotics- when you are sick, these will kill many kinds of bacterial infections. Antibiotics- when you are sick, these will kill many kinds of bacterial infections. ALSO --- Cooking foods thoroughly at the proper temperature. ALSO --- Cooking foods thoroughly at the proper temperature.
10
Avoid cross-contaminating of raw meats and vegetables Washing Hands: cooking, using restroom, touching reptiles Keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot Cook foods thoroughly Vaccine- weakened portion of bacteria is injected, prompting your body to create antibodies that will fight the disease. (USED BEFORE) 1 st Vaccine was developed by Edward Jenner (small pox) Preventing Bacteria
11
Comparing Viruses & Bacteria AlikeDifferent Both cause disease Both are microscopic Both have DNA Bacteria = alive Viruses = not alive
