1. Goliad and Runaway Scrape Station 1 *Urrea’s troops attacked Fannin and his men between Goliad and Victoria – known as the Battle of Coleto Creek on March 19, 1836 -Fannin offered surrender on March 20 th – asked that his men be expelled from TX instead of imprisoned

2. Station 1 Continued Troops from the army of Mexico defeated Texan forces in several clashes, and eventually massacred many of their prisoners of war. Effect: This spread outrage and resentment among the population of the developing Republic of Texas, as well as fear.

3. Station 2 Advantages and Disadvantages The Mexican soldiers had the advantage of fighting from the cover of the woods surrounding the prairie. The Texans were out in the open and had little cover and no water. This meant they had no way to cool their cannon and keep them from overheating.

6. Station 4 Santa Anna’s Cruel Necessity Urrea wrote to Santa Anna, asking that he be allowed to spare the prisoners’ lives. Santa Anna ordered their immediate execution, calling them pirates, fearing that if he let the Texans go they would join others in rebellion. Santa Anna writes Portilla a letter instructing him to carry out the execution of the men. Portilla is furious, but as a good soldier he follows his orders.

7. The Massacre Station 5 On Palm Sunday, March 27, the prisoners were marched out of the fort in 3 groups in different directions and were shot. Many thought they were being taken out to work in the fields, or perhaps being released.

8. Station 5 Continued Some Mexican soldiers did not agree with Santa Anna’s decision and fired over the heads of the Texans, allowing them to escape into the nearby woods.

9. *Station 6 The Effect of the MASSACRE: -Executions were seen as an atrocity: a cruel and brutal act. -People now even more so saw Santa Anna as a cruel dictator -U.S. people furious with brutal treatment of prisoners. *The support of these Americans helped the TX Rev. succeed!

10. Station 7 The Runaway Scrape - Alamo’s fall frightened Texans -People fled when the Mexican army approached -Fear spread….leaving whole towns empty!! -Nickname Texans gave this mass movement “Runaway Scrape” -News of Houston’s retreat & Goliad Massacre sent Texans into a panic!

11. Station 7 (continued) -Most TX men joined Houston’s army -Women had to gather their families and escape Santa Anna’s army “Runaway Scrape” continued until late April 1836. -Houston’s troops and the Mexican Army will soon meet at San Jacinto.
