Objectives 1.What datasets of interest are available 2.How to access those datasets 3.What are AMFs and RMFs 4.Something about the future
4
Overview of presentation Macro/ Aggregate datasets – Central Metadata listing (http://www.statcentral.ie )http://www.statcentral.ie – CSO website ( http://www.cso.ie ) http://www.cso.ie Databases (http://www.cso.ie/px )http://www.cso.ie/px Micro datasets – Key survey vehicles – AMFs/RMFs
5
Statcentral.ie “gateway to official statistics” Listings By theme, organisation Classifications By name, organisation, theme Useful search keywords “child(ren), age, school, family (composition), household (composition), parent “
6
Key household surveys 1.Census of Population 2.Quarterly National Household Survey (special modules) 3.Survey on Income and Living Conditions (SILC) 4.Household Travel Survey 5.Admin data - Vital Statistics, Live register
7
What can be published V What is published Survey Questionnaire - what potentially can be produced Databases - all published data should be available in online databases Releases / Publications - restricted by number of pages, width and length of page.
8
CSO website CSO website primarily organised along delivery channels (Publications / databases / surveys / statistics) Best way to navigate is probably to use the search functionality Useful search keywords “child(ren), age, school, family (composition), household (composition), parent “

AMF - Anonymised Micro Files http://www.cso.ie/aboutus/anon_microdata.htm http://www.cso.ie/aboutus/anon_microdata.htm Anonymised, top or generalised coding used Arrangements via ISSDA under Statistics Act Do not need to be an Officer of Statistics however there are terms and conditions
12
RMF - Research Micro File(s) http://www.cso.ie/aboutus/res_microdata.htm http://www.cso.ie/aboutus/res_microdata.htm Anonymised but risk of disclosure through indirect means maybe significant Primarily used at CSO for business statistics – Can contain a CSO business identifier – Generally data does not go off site – Outputs typically reviewed by CSO staff before being disseminated – Access managed by CSO under Statistics Act RMFs exist for QNHS, SILC and GUI but... More difficult to access than AMFs
13
A little about where we see future development Tap the statistical potential of data in silos across the system Some data sources and projects – Birth, ECCE, Primary school, post primary, further education, employment, unemployment, self employment, pension Currently working with DES on a School Leaver Study
