Question of the Day Question: How are weather and climate different? (take your best guess!) Answer: … … … More than 25 types of elements Turn In Now: Air Pressure & Wind WS (blue) Pressure, Humidity, & Clouds WS (white)

Weather, Climate and Hadley Cells
4
What is weather? Weather is the temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind, and precipitation in a particular area on a particular day. Almost all weather occurs in the troposphere. (That’s where all the atmospheric water is located.)
5
What is climate? Climate is an average of the weather conditions at a particular place over a long period of time. Climate is the long-term predictable state of the atmosphere.
6
Hadley, Ferrel and Polar Cells
Patterns of circulation in the atmosphere that distribute heat on the surface of the Earth.

Tropical (Tropical Wet, Humid Subtropical) – Warm & humid climate; near 0O
Deserts (Tropical Dry, Semiarid, Arid) – Hot & dry climate; near 300 Temperate Forests (Cool Summer, Subarctic)– Moderate temperature & humid; near 60O Tundra (Ice) - Cold & dry (frozen desert); near 90O Mediterranean – always on southwest side of continent
