2 Data management okay Synthesis across schemes could become more clear (overarching WPs). Who is doing what in CARBOOCEAN – website update. How can we maximise the interaction US-Europe? Atlanto-centrism: VOS lines also elsewhere – how to combine. US C cycle program: Address simultaneously fluxes from N.Atl. AND N.Pac. -> how much CO 2 is going into N. America? Add Pacific view. Put CARBOOCEAN into global framework: Atlanto-centrism -> more global view desired – example: continental shelf pump should be addressed in wider range of oceans. CarboEurope/CARBOOCEAN interaction talk by Martin Heimann! C ant inventory discrepancies – use models to reduce uncertainties? How to interact optimally with CarboEurope which is at least 1 year ahead of us? Think about future of CARBOOCEAN. Station network for monitoring: NOAA has a better mission for long-term monitoring. Use as blue print for European (funding) strategy. Time series stations difficult to sustain in Europe as yet.

3 Long-term effect of increased CO 2 on organisms: Real world laboratory, gene expressions, biochemical monitoring (role of enzymes etc.), dissolution kinetics of CaCO 3 in water column. Diverse modelling is a richness – how to use the power in modelling better? How can models help to analyse VOS data, subsurfae data, ocean interior data? Are models robust enough to be combined successfully with data? What data assimilation actions ongoing, which are needed? O 2 measurements and O 2 cycle importance well recognised, exceeds expectations but should be pursued with same power also in future. Meeting with more science presentations is more rich. Description -> understanding phase difficult to do. We have to follow up on progress. Process studies and how to implement them into forecasts could become more visible (though they are carried out). Process people needed for new project phase. Need to include more ocean dynamicists in studies. Organise summerschools for cross participation modellers/observers.

4 Paradigm shift: Research is quickly moving way from Broecker’s steady state ocean to a changing ocean. Broecker’s way of understanding is still valid but should be extended to a non- steady world.
