7 Preview to Unit 8: Spanish Exploration The competition for wealth in Asia among European nations prompted Christopher Columbus to make a daring voyage from Spain in 1492. Instead of sailing south around Africa and then east, Columbus sailed west across the Atlantic in search of an alternate trade route to Asia and its riches. Instead of arriving in Asia, he stepped onto an island in the Caribbean. The Europeans would bring many dangers with them to the new world that the natives had not yet been exposed to, such as diseases…
