3. The Hoover Dam –Construction The construction period was from April 20, 1931 to March 1, 1936, ending over two years ahead of schedule. The construction cost was $49 million in 1936, which would be $736 million in 2008, due to inflation. Originally, there were 16 big generators, 8 on each side of the river, but 2 smaller ones replaced one big one on the Arizona side, adding up to 17 generators total. The construction team totaled approximately 5,000 people at any given time, and a total of about 15,000 people were employed over the course of construction.
