Big Idea Electricity and magnetism are related effects that have many useful applications such as conversion to heat, motion, and sound. Guiding Questions 1.How do we know when we have a simple series circuit? 2.What happens when one component from a simple series circuit is removed? 3.How is the brightness of 2 or more light bulbs affected when they are connected in a simple series circuit?
2
Once again you search your backpacks for materials that might give you a brighter light. Your partner discovers more things that could help. He finds another bulb and another D-cell (battery). He also finds 2 wires, 2 bulb holders, and 2 battery holders. Yesterday you managed to light the bulb, but the light was not bright enough for you to see well inside the cave.
3
Think and talk about… Where are the hikers? What do they need? What additional materials did they find in their backpacks? What is the problem that needs to be solved?
4
Focus Question Write a question in your notebook that is related to the scenario and can be investigated. Your question should be correctly written; capital letter and ending punctuation. Your question should not be able to be answered with a yes or no. You do not need to have the same question as your group.
5
The light we have is not bright enough to see in the cave, so how can we connect the new materials to produce a brighter light? Class Focus Question

Simple Circuit Simple Series Circuit One pathwayComponents: Battery Wires Light Bulb Control circuit
7
Prediction I think if we connect the _________________________ ________________________________________ then _____________________________________________ because ______________________________________ _____________________________________________ What should I do with the extra wires, battery and light bulb?
8
Planning Control Circuit 1 D cell battery 1 light bulb2 wires Test 1 Test 2 Test 3 Leave this column blank. You will need it to record your observations.
9
Measuring Brightness Control Circuit 1 D cell battery 1 light bulb 2 wiresScore Test 1 Test 2 Test 3 3: Brighter than the control 2: Same as the control 1: less than the control 0: no light
10
Meaning Making Conference Did any circuit make a light that was brighter than the control circuit? Why do you think the light got brighter? Did any circuit make a light that was not as bright as the control circuit? Why do you think the light was more dim? How many pathways does a simple series circuit have for the electrons to choose?
11
Claims and Evidence I claim that… I know that…. I claim this because… I know this because….

Conclusion Today I learned__________________________________________ My thinking has changed since I made my original prediction. I used to think ________________________________________________________, but now I know _______________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________. Reflection I wonder what would happen if… I’d like to know more about…
