If you don’t have one yet, see me after class. Is there anybody who does not have their physical portfolio in this classroom? (i.e. it is still in your old teacher’s classroom?) Homework: Active vs. Passive Voice worksheet— due tomorrow. I’ll distribute it at the end of the class period.

Written and Oral English Language Conventions 1.3: Demonstrate an understanding of proper English usage and control of grammar, paragraph and sentence structure… and syntax. Reading 3.9 Explain how voice [and] persona… affect characterization and the tone…
4
Write a sentence about what I just did (include both me and the kitty cat in the sentence).
5
Now, write a sentence in which the kitty cat is the main subject (rather than my action with the kitty cat).
6
Take notes: Active voice: “Ms. Pierce pet the kitty cat” Passive voice: “The kitty cat was pet by Ms. Pierce”
7
Active voice occurs when the person or object performing the action (the doer) is the main focus of the subject. Ex: Napolean ate all his tots. Ex: Later, Pedro broke the pinata that looks like Summer. Ex: The prime rib hit him in the face.
8
Passive voice occurs when the receiver of the action becomes the focus, or the subject of the sentence. Ex: All of the tots were eaten by Napolean. Ex: The pinata of Summer was broken by Pedro. Ex: His face was hit by the prime rib.
