Why Social Media Matters ●Communication is only as powerful as the strength of its messages, “Why Social Media Matters”, by Kitty Porterfield and Meg Carnes ●79% of adults use the internet (Pew Research Center, 2010) ●Social networking use among internet users ages 50 and older has doubled from 2009 to 2010 Pew Internet and American Life Project ●One of every 8 minutes online is spent on Facebook (comScore, 2011) ●Only 26% of all Americans say they read a print newspaper yesterday. That drops to 8% for adults under 30 Pew Research Center, 2010

How Mobile is Changing Communication ●90% of parents have a cell phone ●75% of adults in households with incomes less than $30,000 have cell phones and 90% between $30,000-$49,000 ●Americans now own an average of 4 digital devices ●Americans spend 60 hours a week on digital devices ●1 in 4 online searches are conducted on a mobile device. ●75% of people use their phones while in the bathroom. ●More than 1 million smartphone devices are activated every day
