Freewriting: For this strategy you simply write everything that comes into your head about the subject without worrying if it is any good or not. EX: When I think back about climbing Mt. Jefferson, the first thing I think about is my three friends—Luke, Mark, and Steve. It is funny how we were all do different and yet we did everything together—started dating, driving, went to the same parties—everything. Now I look at where we all ended up, and I guess our differences won out.. Its funny that I say we climbed the mountain. The truth is that we never even reached it. As often happens with scouts— especially later in the program, we hadn’t planned a thing. We were all like, yeah, lets go climb the mountain,. That would be awesome. What we didn’t realize was that it was the most technical mountain in all of Oregon. People die every year—that kind of thing. No, we were thinking it might just be pretty cool to say that we had climbed a mountain, so we started….

Story Board This strategy works best for people who like to draw. In this case you picture the story in you mind’s eye and then draw the events in order as though it were a comic book.
5
Story Components This strategy is one a lot of teachers like to use. In this case you break the story up into certain elements such as characters, settings, problems, suspenseful moments, etc…, and then you list the components in a chart. CharactersSettingsProblemsSuspense Me Me Steve Steve Luke Luke Mark Mark Marine guy Marine guy His Dog His Dog Church Church Base camp Base camp Lake Lake Hot Springs Hot Springs Marine Ambulence Marine Ambulence No plan No plan Gear Gear No skill/training No skill/training Nudist colony Nudist colony Getting lost Getting lost Feeling like we weren’t making progress Feeling like we weren’t making progress Steve gets sick (gross!)
