Introduction CARAFFA’S prison is one of the few well- preserved gothic buildings remaining in Prešov, Thanks to its appearance, as well as its name, the building invites rather grim associations, However, its history is much more mundane than its name would suggest.

History of the name The building was given its name in the time of the bloody slaughter-house of Prešov in 1687,

Based on an unjust verdict of a Caesarean general Antonio Caraffa from Naples, 24 Hungarian yeomen and burghers were executed.

Antonio von Caraffa He was born in the Neapolitan House of Carafa, He was introduced at the Kaiserhof in Vienna in 1655 by his cousin Cardinal Carlo Carafa della Spina,

Later he entered the Imperial Army, and became a Colonel in 1672, when he participated in the War against the Turks in Hungary, During the Siege of Vienna, he was sent by Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor to Warsaw, to urge Polish King John III Sobieskito come to the help of the city. In 1685, he took Prešov from the Turks. He established a torture chamber in Carrafa‘s prison.

The use of prison This is one of the few surviving Gothic monuments in Presov, It was constructed in 1 504 but it has not been used like the prison,

The building served as a warehouse winery barrels and other accessories probably until the late 17th century, In 1 530 was already being mentioned as a prison.

20th century It has been used for filing urban documents, 1955-1956- it has been used for filing documents for Municipal Archives in Prešov.
