SPI 0601.1.6 Choose the correct use of quotation marks and commas in direct quotations.
4
It depends on whether you're quoting exactly what someone said (a direct quotation) or talking about what someone said or might say (an indirect quotation). If you are directly quoting someone, put the word in quotation marks: Sarah smiled and said, "Yes." I looked up from my desk and said, "No, you can't have a cookie.“ If you are indirectly quoting someone, don't put the word in quotation marks: He wondered whether Sarah would say yes. I looked up from my desk and told him no, he couldn't have a cookie.

The twins, Molly and Max, asked at the same time, Mom when can we go to the park? I became a doctor said Leigh because I wanted to help people. Bart exclaimed I did nothing wrong as they locked him in the prison cell. Download the music onto a CD said Cheryl we can listen to it while we head for the coast.

My roommate said she needed some sleep. He told me he studied authentic Italian cooking at Casa Ombuto in the Tuscan countryside. The tour guide announced the bus would depart promptly at noon. Chrissy told Pat to meet her at the park for lunch.

Quotation marks are used to show someone’s exact words. The children said excitedly, “Let’s ride on the Jungle Cruise!”
8
1) Place a comma after the word that lets you know the person is saying something. Mickey said happily, “Come visit Disney World!”
9
Rule 2) Insert quotation marks before the first word of the person’s exact words and after the punctuation mark at the end of the person’s last word. The crowd exclaimed, “What a wonderful parade!”
10
Rule 3) Capitalize the first word of the person’s exact words. Caitlyn screamed, “Goofy, this is a blast!”

Commas in Quotations Follow your rules for dialogue punctuation. If the He said comes first, place the comma after said. He said, “I know Kung Fu.” If the he said comes after the quote, place the comma inside the quotation marks after the last word in the quotation. “I’ll dance with you,” he said. Commas in Quotations If the he said comes in the middle of the quote, place the comma inside the quotation marks after the last word in the first part of the quote and after the he said. “Put the box,” he said, “in the house.” Purdue University Writing Lab
