Terms/Concepts Space-time Compression Diffusion Hearth Relocation Diffusion Expansion Diffusion Hierarchical Diffusion Contagious Diffusion Stimulus Diffusion Spatial Interaction Distance Decay
3
Connection Characteristics spread from one place to another through diffusion Connection between places result in spatial interaction Space-time compression- the reduction in the time it takes for something to reach another place –Has become increasingly smaller
4
Diffusion Diffusion- the process by which characteristics spread across space from one place to another over time –Hearth- place from which innovation originates
5
Relocation Diffusion Relocation Diffusion- the spread of an idea through physical movement of people from one place to another
6
Expansion Diffusion Expansion Diffusion- the spread of a feature from one place to another in an additive process –Three different ways: Hierarchical Diffusion- from of an idea from persons or nodes of authority –Political Leaders and Socially Elite People
7
Contagious Diffusion- the rapid widespread diffusion of a feature or trend throughout a population –Like the spread of a disease Stimulus Diffusion- the spread of an underlying principle
8
Spatial Interaction Spatial Interaction- when places are connected through a network –The farther away people are from one another, the less likely the two groups are to interact Distance Decay- the diminishing in importance and eventual disappearance of a phenomenon with increasing difference from its origin
