Friction

Friction is a force that opposes motion Friction can never cause motion Friction can prevent motion or inhibit the continuation of motion Friction can only occur when two surfaces are in contact

Friction According to Newton’s 3 rd law, if a force is applied to an object at rest, two things can occur The object will remain at rest if there is enough friction If no motion occurs, then the action force (force applied) must be equal and opposite the reactionary force (force of friction)

Friction and Free Body Diagrams Friction is a reaction force according to Newton’s 3 rd Law

Static Friction Static friction is occurs when an object is not in motion As an object is pushed, the friction pushes back with an equal but opposite force F A = -F f As the applied force increases, so does the force of friction.

Force of friction static max What happens when the applied force finally starts to move the object? This means that there is a “give point” or a “point of maximum stickiness” due to the static friction This maximum is called the force of friction static max It is symbolized by F fsmax

Calculating F fsmax F fsmax can be calculated if we know something about the surface contact. Scientist measured the stickiness of surfaces to find relationships of the surface contact to the force of friction The coefficient of static friction is the factor that lets us calculate that maximum stickiness Mu (  s ) is the symbol of the coefficient of static friction

Coefficient of Static Friction Only used to tell if an object is moving or not It is unit-less It is usually given in a problem or calculated from the information given in a problem There are large data bases filled with coefficients of friction.

Friction and Free Body Diagrams Is it moving? Does the applied force exceed the F fsmax ?

Friction and Free Body Diagrams Is it moving?
