Algebra Tables, Spreadsheets and Graphs
2
Solving Equations in Algebra 1.Substituting values manually by hand Find the value of Y when X=10 2.Using a table or spreadsheet Find a range of values for Y when X = 1,2... 10 3.Using a graph Plot a graph that shows all the values of y between X = 0 and X =10 3 ways to solve equations
3
Substituting a Single Value Take an equation for calculating the cost of buying Euros for a holiday trip Cost in Pounds (P) = Number of Euros (E) x The Rate of Exchange (R) + The commission charge (C) or P=ER+C If R = 0.6 and C = 2 then P=.6E + 2 To find the cost for 10 Euros, substitute E=10 P = (0.6 x 10) + 2 which gives P = 6 + 2 = 8 When E = 10, P = 8 1 value in gives 1 value out
4
Using a Table or Spreadsheet Useful when dealing with more than single values Tables are a useful way of displaying data Spreadsheets make use of ‘functions’ to automatically fill- in the answers Saving you time Many values in give many values out
5
Plotting an Equation as a Graph A continuous line that joins up all the points A visual illustration of the relationship between 2 variables (i.e. Euros and Pounds) This example is a linear equation You can extend the straight line to find other values Other types of equations do not have straight line graphs Showing a equation as a picture
