3 Goals Explain/clarify Ohio’s Learning Standards in Math & Language Arts Share what learning math and language arts looks like in the classroom. Suggest ways parents can support their children in learning these standards.

5 As parents, we want our kids to be well-prepared for college and life, but we don’t always know where to start and what to do. How do we know our children’s progress? ▪Report Cards or online gradebook system ▪Test Scores (school and state testing) ▪Parent-Teacher Conferences ▪Parent-Teacher Communication ▪What your child tells you ▪What schoolwork your child shares with you 411

6 What are they and why are they important? ❖ A set of clear and consistent learning goals per grade and subject ❖ Crafted by teachers, administrators, and other education experts ❖ Emphasis on critical thinking skills over rote memorization practice Ohio’s Learning Standards

7 Four Strands: ❖ Reading ❖ Writing ❖ Speaking and Listening ❖ Language (vocabulary, spelling, grammar/conventions) ❖ Each strand is further broken down into specific standards. ❖ Separate standards are included for reading and writing in history/social studies, science and technical subjects English/Language Arts

8 ❖ Strands: ❖ Counting & Cardinality (K) ❖ Operations & Algebraic Thinking (K-5) ❖ Number & Operations in Base Ten (K-5) ❖ Number and Operations-Fractions (3-5) ❖ Measurement & Data (K-5) ❖ Geometry (K-5) ❖ Each grade level has specific strands that they focus on…not all strands are taught at all grade levels (developmentally appropriate). ❖ There are more strands that are introduced and developed at upper grades (6-12). Math

11 State-based assessments (Computer or paper- pencil based) District-created assessments Teacher-created assessments & checkpoints (during learning and after learning) Measures of Student Achievement

13 AT SCHOOL, TEACHERS: ➢ Work diligently to teach Ohio’s Learning Standards ➢ Creatively teach & model critical thinking and problem solving skills in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies ➢ Collaborate with each other and parents to address differentiated student needs (to reach ALL learners) ➢ Continually check student progress to ensure students are learning (before, during, & after instruction) It Takes Teamwork

14 AT HOME, PARENTS: ➢ Routinely read-together with your student and discuss what you read (daily is best) ➢ Creatively model critical thinking and problem solving skills in everyday, real world situations (through daily situations i.e. Trips to the grocery store, household responsibilities) ➢ Provide opportunities for your child to interact with engaging learning activities (both online and hands- on) It Takes Teamwork

15 ADMINISTRATORS: ➢ Routinely meet with and support teachers to monitor student progress ➢ Support teachers with creating and implementing standards-based lessons and assessments ➢ Provide opportunities for professional development to improve instruction ➢ Actively communicate with parents about school initiatives and student needs ➢ Promote parent involvement It Takes Teamwork
