Historical Context Lynching – Hanging, shooting or more brutal – Mob violence – Nearly 5,000 people lynched in early 1900s Race Riots – 1919 – “Red Summer”, 26 riots – Chicago Black man floats into “white swimming area”. Whites throw rocks at him until he drowns. 13 day riot, over 1000 homeless, mostly black, due to burning property.

Historical Context Atlanta - – Whites trying to disenfranchise black voters – White-owned newspapers print false claims about white women being raped by black men – Causes race riot – murder, looting and destruction of property – Black men arrested for arming themselves in self- defense

Riot Rioting broke out in the town with attempts to disarm blacks Whites burned and looted black homes and burned the town to the ground White men were deputized to “restore order” – Participated in looting as well National Guard called in - reports of machine guns and planes used to spot black people

Results Interned citizens had to “pay back” their lodging at fairgrounds by cleaning up. Historians now estimate 300 people killed. 1256 homes destroyed. No compensation for property loss ever given. 35 blocks burned to the ground by white rioters.
