Colonial Society Economy – New England: blacksmith, sewing, shopkeeper – Middle colonies: farming, mining, shipbuilding – South: farming, (tobacco, rice) Religion differences – Puritans- no toleration – PA/RI- yes to toleration Increase population Education – Build Colleges (Harvard/Princeton) – Some public education/others NO – Against law to teach enslaved African Americans to read/write

Families – Large Men at head of household MOST families FARMED together (agricultural society) MOST married women have few rights All women cannot vote (only white men) – And, most men had to own property to vote (different in each colony)

Ideas about Govt. - Enlightenment : Question natural rights - Great Awakening : Question religion - Enlightenment + Great awakening = - Egalitarianism (Question Equality) * Want equal rights as English do - Colonies ruled by governors appointed by king. - Colonist have no say with taxes/ laws -Colonists angry that England is so far away, BUT they still have to listen to the King -Start thinking: Independence.

U.S. and England separated by 3,000 miles Colonists have self government (govern selves) Under Salutary neglect = HEALTHY relationship – British did NOT use strict enforcement of laws 1760: George III take power – Policies towards U.S. begin to change Mercantilism: theory that a country’s power depends on its wealth – Sell more than buy – Export more than import GOAL: Make $$$ England realizes they could use colonies for resources and $$$
