Geography of the Asante Kingdom The Asante Kingdom was located in present day Ghana.

When the Asante reigned Late 1600s to late 1800s ● The Asante first appeared in the late 1600s ● They grew and flourished until the early 1900s

Key Information ● The Ashanti’s first established state was around Kurami ● Started as a single state until Osei Tutu ● Osei Tutu was the first to begin uniting the surrounding chiefdoms ● Osei Tutu used the Golden Stool to represent his rule

The Rise of the Asante Kingdom ●Trade ○ Akan village states traded with each other ○ Europeans and neighbors to trade too ○ Village states formed one kingdom to protect trade ●Denkyera ○ Enemy village states to the south ○ Threatened the Asante causing unification

The Fall of the Asante Kingdom ● Great Britain o wanted control of the Gold Coast o Gold Coast was under Asante control o When they seized the Coast, the Asante declared war

The Fall of the Asante (cont.) ● The Asante Wars o Fought between the British and Asante o British forces easily crushed any opposition o Defeats and loss of land led to rebellions o Seeing the enemy too weak, Britain annexed Asante and exiled the leaders

The Asante Kingdom’s Importance ● Slavery o The Asante were the largest slave traders in Africa o The fall of the Asante eventually led to the end of the slave trade o European countries did not take them over until then because of their control of the slave trade
