2 The Greatest Integer Function y = [x]
If you know game show “The Price Is Right” then this function will be easy for you.

3 So, what will each “point” look like?
Lets go to graphing calculator to figure it out. So instead of points you get “steps”. Now lets see what happens as you change the function – looking at “trends”.

4 So, we’ve seen the following trends:
Add/Subtract inside?  Move step left/right Add/Subtract outside?  Move step up/down Multiply/Divide inside:  Change step length Multiply/Divide outside?  Change distance between steps

5 But how do we graph? You could use the trends to graph. Or, use a mathematical method and then look at what you predict should happen to double check. The mathematical method will work as long as you follow directions!! We’ll do a problem on the board as we learn the method.

6 Method Set the inside of the greatest integer between 0 and 1, 1 and 2 and 2 and 3. Determine what y would be based on the greatest integer value of all those numbers in that particular domain. Solve for x to figure out the adjusted domain. Lay a step on the x axis (part 3) then move it up on the y axis.
