Completing the Circle Bringing health, wellness, workers’ compensation and disability into an integrated process at Textron Gary Anderberg, PhD, Broadspire

Where did we start?  Textron– large, diversified, multi- state manufacturer  Disability and workers’ compensation integrated in 2009  One manager for all disability programs  The great majority of employees have the same group health plan

Who are the players?  Conductor– Dan Shaughnessy, Textron  Strings/Group health– United HealthCare  Woodwinds/Disability– Metropolitan  Brass/Workers’ compensation– Broadspire  Percussion/EAP– regional vendors

What are the problems?  An aging workforce  Chronic disease management services in place but underutilized  Wellness services in place but underutilized  A growing need to control disability costs while doing the right thing for employees

The solution– work together  United provides a long list of wellness and chronic disease management (CDM) services for Textron  The ready availability of both wellness and CDM programs is the key.  Consider– every claim is a teachable moment– don’t waste it!

Connecting the dots  Both the disability and the WC teams have been instructed in what services are available from UHC and how to match injuries, illnesses, or co-morbids to the right wellness or CDM service.  Referral processes have been established– from warm transfer to a daily reach out list (in WC, jurisdiction counts).  Metrics are being developed to track referrals, employee actions and success.

Looping in the EAPs  Textron’s EAPs are regional, so a separate technique was called for.  A letter, tailored to where the claimant lives, is included in the STD or the WC claim packet.  The nurse handling a new claim may also suggest accessing the correct EAP when the claim warrants.  The letter and the call function as gentle reminders– you have this service and now might be a good time to access it.

Using the teachable moment  A person who has just filed a disability claim and is now off work is alert and concerned and engaged– and ready for the message of the program:  Now is the time to get serious about wellness.  Now is the time to get that chronic co- morbid condition under control.  Now is the time to take the rest of your life seriously.
