Sugar, Stamp and Townshend Acts K. Williams, PRES

An act is like a law. You will learn about all the acts that England and the king set up. All of the acts made the colonists feel very angry.

First was the Sugar Act. In 1764, England tried to make people pay taxes on sugar and molasses. Taxes are like extra money.

The colonists did not want to pay the extra money. England said that they had to.

The next act was called the Stamp Act. This act was in 1765. This time England was taxing paper.

People had to pay extra money on paper. To show the money was paid, a big blue stamp went on the paper. PAID

This time the colonists were so angry, they got together to say no!

The king was surprised at how angry the colonists were. He was worried that there might be more fighting.

He decided to stop the Stamp Act. People did not have to pay extra money on paper any more.

In 1767, England decided to tax the colonists again. The Townshend Act said people in America had to pay extra money for lots of things.

The taxes were on paper, lead, paint, and tea.

People did not want to pay the taxes, so they stopped buying things from England.

People in America made their own paint and cloth. England did not make as much money since people were not buying their things.

England decided to stop the taxes on everything but tea in 1770. Colonists in America were still very angry. More problems were coming.
