7 1.What do Satan, Judas, Brutus, and Cassius have in common? (What sins did all three commit?) In your opinion, is this sin deserving of the innermost layer of hell? Why/why not? In your opinion, what 3 layers of Dante’s hell deserve the worst torments/punishments? Why? (refer to 9 circles) 2.Brutus and Cassius have leading roles in Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, but Dante clearly did not regard them as heroes (neither did Shakespeare). What do you think Dante’s attitude would have been towards Shakespeare’s Macbeth? What level would Macbeth have occupied in Dante’s hell? Cite support from the play to explain your answer. 3.In a memorable line, Dante describes his terror in the lowest depths of Hell by saying “I neither died, nor kept alive” (28) Explain what he means, and why would such a fate be especially terrifying? Then, choose and analyze one additional significant quote from Canto 34. 4. Suppose Dante were writing today, What categories of sin would he find especially prevalent in the modern world? Create modern categories for the 9 levels of hell (refer to 9 circles)
