Unit 1 overview This unit covers the concept (idea) of tourism, its importance to the UK economy and the range of travel and tourism component (part) industries.

Outcomes ALL will understand the reasons why people travel

Leisure Tourists are away from home during their FREE TIME for a variety of reasons such as a holiday or a shopping trip.

Example: An example of a leisure holiday is a family holiday to Disney Land, Paris. During these types of holidays people can visit different countries and get to know the people and the culture and visit attractions and historical sites.

Business Tourists are away from home or their usual workplace and are undertaking work while away. They maybe attending a business meeting, trade fair or conference, or be on a sales trip. Of course a business tourist may become a leisure tourist during his or her visit.

Visiting friends or relatives This is known as VFR. Many people travel to visit friends or relatives that live in other parts of the UK or abroad.

Other reasons Although sometimes to be considered as part of the leisure grouping this category includes those away from their home for such reasons as: to participate in or watch sporting events, attend religious events, go on an educational course or have a health treatment.
