1.Velocity: speed with direction 2.Instantaneous speed: Speed at any instant of time 3.Distance: How far something has travelled. 4.Displacement: HOW FAR & in what DIRECTION something is from a starting point

Linear Motion Distance & Displacement

DISTANCE AND DISPLACEMENT  The motion of objects can be described by the observer’s frame of reference.  What is a frame of reference? A person moving relative to something not moving.  Distance and Displacement:  -Distance (d) is a scalar quantity which refers to “how much ground an object has covered” during its motion  -Displacement ( d ) is a vector-quantity which refers to “how far out of place an object is from its original position”; it is the object’s change in position.

 In other words: distance is a scalar quantity & tells you only the magnitude (number sum only) of a path taken; displacement is the shortest distance between the starting point and the end point.

 Distance is a scalar quantity which means it provides simple magnitudes (amounts only). Example: 15 apples or 135 miles  Displacement is a vector quantity which means it contains information about the magnitude (size) and direction of a physical observation.  Example: 64 miles Southwest

 Vectors contain information about the magnitude (size/amount) and direction of a physical observation. Vectors are typically depicted as arrows drawn with a specific length & pointing in a specific direction. See direction: North is up; South is down; East is right; West is left  See examples of the 3 types:

 Position: location of the object at a specific time----used with displacement  Why does it matter?  Distance vs. Displacement:  -Displacement is the shortest directed distance from start to finish  -Distance is the amount of ground covered (can be obtained from the odometer in a car)
