Chapter 3 : Communicating Ideas
2
Audio communication – messages that can be heard
3
Audiovisual communication: Ideas and messages that can be both seen and heard.
4
CAD: a method of making drawings using a computer; CAD stands for Computer- Aided Design.
5
Communication: the process of exchanging information and ideas between 2 or more living beings.
6
Communication Technology: the transmitting and receiving of information using technical means, such as special devices for transmitting and receiving information and special mediums for transmission.
7
Construction Line: thin, faint lines used to start a drawing.
8
Drafting: drawings of ideas to be communicated, often called the “language of industry”.
9
Feedback: In manufacturing, it is information provided to a manufacturer by consumers after they try samples of a product; in communication, a receiver’s response to a source’s question or statement.
10
Isometric paper: paper that is used for sketching. It has a grid of vertical lines and other lines at 30 degrees to the horizontal.
11
Isometric sketching: the simplest type of picture-like drawing; it is used to share an idea or record ideas for further discussion.
12
Line Drawing: objects and ideas represented by lines and shapes.
13
Medium: the agent over which information is sent.
14
Object Line: line that is darker and thicker than a construction line; they are used to show the outline of an object.
15
Orthographic Projection: kind of drawing that shows each surface of the object “square on” (at right angles to the surface).
16
Perspective sketching: sketching method that provides the most realistic picture of objects.
17
Receiver: In communication, something or someone who gets a message.
18
Scale Drawing: A drawing that is larger or smaller than the object by a fixed ratio.
19
Source: In communication, the starting point of a message.
20
Storage: Information that is understood and stored for later use.
21
Symbol: simple picture or shape used as a means of communicating without using words.
22
View: in orthographic projection, a drawing of the front, top, or right side of an object as seen looking at right angles to the surface.
23
Virtual Reality: an artificial environment provided by a computer that creates sights, sounds, and, occasionally, feelings through the use of a mask, speakers, and gloves or other sensory-enhancing devices.
24
Visual Communication: ideas in a form that we can see.
