Langston Hughes: “Theme for English B” Due: _______________
2
Assignment You will write your own free verse which should be modeled after Langston Hughes’, “Theme for English B”. Use the following questions, but feel free to elaborate and use figurative language, symbolism, and sensory words.
3
First set of questions How old are you? Where were you born? Name the city or area you live. Describe the area with vivid details. Describe and name the school you identify with.
4
Second Set of questions Describe and name the group of people you identify with. Why do you identify with them (similarities, beliefs, looks…?) What do you feel? What do you hear? What do you like to do?
5
Final Set of Questions What do you dislike? What would you like to have and/or do in the future? Conclude your poem with “this is my page for English II”
6
Reminders NOT DO NOT BEGIN ANY SENTENCES WITH “I”! This is your truth, not mine. Let it reflect you.
7
Visual Component: On an 8x10 sheet or larger, your poem needs to be typed or extremely well written and placed in the center of the page. Surrounding the poem should be visuals which represent the IDEAS presented in your poem.
8
Visuals: May come from drawings (no stick figures), magazine clippings, photos, 3-D objects, or printouts. NO CLIP ART!!! Must cover entire page Must be varied and plentiful- Do not give me six visuals and expect a good grade Must be colorful and creative- No pencil drawings that are not colored May not be placed on notebook paper!! Printer paper or construction paper may be used

Grading The entire project counts as a quiz grade. Quiz grades are daily grades that count TWICE. Daily grades are 40% of your overall grade!
