How to Write and Present a Module! By: Anjuman Shah TEACH President
2
What is a module? An INTERACTIVE presentation that teaches something More discussion, less lecture ACTIVITY-BASED! NO Powerpoint presentations
3
Problem Statement Probably the most difficult part of module Questions to ask yourself: –Why is it important for the specific at-risk population to learn about your topic? –How will knowing this info benefit the target audience? How will this info improve their lives? –What are the key messages of your module? Addressing the need for your presentation here—explaining why it needs to be taught
4
Problem Statement (cont.) Do research. USE STATS! (specific to LA or CA) Refer specifically to the Los Angeles and Venice communities* List all sources used Imagine that you are trying to get funding to do your presentation *most people forget to do this. Don’t be one of them!
5
Objectives Make them S.M.A.R.T. ( specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, time-sensitive) “By the end of the module presentation, at least 80% of the kids should be able to…” Keep them simple. Make about 4-6 objectives
6
Pre/Post Test Used to evaluate how much kids learned from your module (max. 5 questions!) Questions that directly test your OBJECTIVES! Pre and post test have EXACT same questions Use simple language and ask simple questions (don’t make questions too wordy) Use variety of question styles –Washington: pic. questions and matching works best –Tabor: MC, fill-in-the blank, matching, etc. Pre = before module, post = after module
7
Timeline YOU are in charge of planning the last hour of site, so the time spent on each activity is up to you! Allow 5 min. for pre and post tests (total 10 min.), which leaves 50 min. for rest of module activities Spend NO MORE THAN 15 min. on any one activity (the kids lose interest fast). We recommend 10 min. per activity!
8
The Form Itself 3 drafts (rough, revised, final) Explain and describe ENTIRE presentation in the appropriate section BEFORE making edits, copy and paste entire draft into the next section and then start making changes But why?
9
What do I mean by explain and describe? Write out directions for each activity you plan List ALL information you will be telling the kids (bullet point form) Include ALL graphics, worksheets, etc. that you will show/use DIRECTLY into the module form (not as separate attachment) List ALL sources used! *We should be able to teach your module the exact way you did by looking @ the form.
10
Activity Guidelines Split kids up into groups Plan stations and have kids rotate from station to station (3 stations work best), with each station led by a diff. person Bring all kids together for intro and conclusion MUST incorporate one outdoor activity that gives kids physical exercise (@ least 15 min.) Use SIMPLE language (keep your audience in mind when planning your module) Plan @ least 2 back-up activities in case the kids finish early or an activity isn’t working too well
11
Need Materials? YOU are responsible for printing out enough copies of pre/post tests and any other worksheets/handouts for the kids If you need additional supplies for your modules, you MUST e-mail Sissi Chen (tianyuchen@ucla.edu) @ least ONE WEEK IN ADVANCE.tianyuchen@ucla.edu If request is NOT received one week prior to presentation date, you will NOT get reimbursed.
12
Deadlines Rough draft due 1.5-2 weeks before presentation date Site coordinators (SC) will e-mail you back feedback within 48 hours E-mail rough and revised ONLY to SCs E-mail final to SCs, Dr. Esdin, and teach.ucla@gmail.com teach.ucla@gmail.com No hard copy required PLEASE TURN IN MODULES ON TIME. Late modules will affect your Med 160B final grade. If you need an extension, CONTACT YOUR SC IMMEDIATELY!
13
Changes to Site Calculate score improvement from pre to post test and tell your SCs the percentage BEFORE leaving site Incorporate something in your module that allows kids to take-home something as a reminder of module (ex: worksheets, crossword puzzles, crafts, fact sheet, etc.)
14
Friendly Tips :) Be creative. Have fun with your module! Make modules INTERACTIVE! Less lecture, more activities Put yourself in the kids shoes when planning. Be excited about your module! The more enthusiastic you are about your module, the more enthusiastic your kids will be. ASK QUESTIONS if you are confused about anything or need help! Ask for help if you need it. We are all here for you! COMMUNICATION IS KEY. Keep your SC in the loop. Don’t be nervous, be confident. You’ll do great! :)
