EYFS Maths Wednesday 3 rd February

Aims of the sessions -To understand what your child is taught in Maths. -To understand how your child is taught Maths. -To become aware of useful resources that will support your child in their Mathematical understanding. -To understand how to help your child at home to improve their Mathematical skills.

What we teach and how we teach Number Shape, Space and Measure Early Learning Goals

How children learn -Daily carpet sessions linked to Maths -Cross- curricular table top activities and outdoor -Lots of talking -Thinking -Self-discovery -Problem solving -Asking questions -Real-life learning -Play experiences

Maths through play Play is the natural way in which children learn. Young children are learning maths all the time through a variety of play experiences. Children will begin to: -Know and understand early maths language of measurement, shapes, spaces, positions, early numbers, order and patterns. -Know the sequence of numbers. -Begin to understand positional words, e.g. in, on, outside -Show awareness of time -Be aware of shapes in their environment -Be aware of 1-1 correspondence -Acquire new vocabulary -Learn number rhymes and songs e.g. one, two buckle my shoe etc

Number formation -We have rhymes for forming each numeral -Air write numbers -Writing on whiteboards -Using paint and chalk -Writing in sand, glitter, foam etc..

How do we teach counting? -Verbal repetition 1, 2, 3,4, 5! (without objects) - Then we use concrete manipulatives.

How do we teach counting? -Then we move onto abstract pictures

Comparing amounts

1 more Count how many. Add one more – now how many?

1 less Count how many. Take one away–how many are there now?

Numicon Numicon is a great resource. Numicon shapes help children to understand numbers in a new way. Helps understand the value of numbers. We use Numicon to match the corresponding numerals to the correct plates Finding the matching pair Counting accurately Weighing them Ordering them from smallest to biggest and biggest smallest Finding one more and one less

Adding and taking away

We use Numicon and objects to help us add and take away. How many are there altogether? Who has more/less? How do you know? Can you use different numicon pieces to make 5? 10? 20?

Shape, Space and Measure Shapes in the environment – describing shapes eg round, flat. Naming 2D and 3D shapes. Describing their position in relation to objects – behind, next to etc. Describe and create patterns – Uses the mathematical vocabulary of size, weight, capacity, distance, time and money.

Early learning goals Number Children count reliably with numbers from one to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number. Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer. They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing. Shape, space and measure Children use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money to compare quantities and objects and to solve problems. They recognise, create and describe patterns. They explore characteristics of everyday objects and shapes and use mathematical language to describe them.

Helping your child at home. There are lots of ways you can help your child. Here are a few ideas. For more ideas please take away the hand out.

Numbers Numbers are all around us and lots of games can be played with them. Such as: Can you find me a number 1 more or 1 one less than….? Which is the biggest/smallest number? Can you order these numbers? Lots of counting

How much time we have to get ready? What time is it?

Measuring, weighing and making

Going shopping has lots of opportunities for learning Reading price tags Counting items into the basket Finding and counting coins Comparing weights – which is heavier

Putting the shopping away can also offer lots of opportunities for learning Can you put all the boxes with straight edges in this bag? How many will fit in the cupboard/ on the shelf? Is the item heavy or light? Is the packaging big or small? Is it bigger/smaller than ….

Thank you for coming Please feel free to ask any questions. Some useful websites: www.crickweb.co.uk www.topmarks.co.uk www.twinkl.co.uk www.ictgames.co.uk Websites on hand out for you
