2 ■The sequence of related events that make up a story or novel. ■What happens in the story. ■Conflict-a struggle between opposing forces. –1. external conflict-a character struggles with an outside force, such as another character or something in nature. –2. internal conflict-a character struggles with their own needs, desires or emotions.

4 Parts of the Plot ■Exposition-the opening, the background information or events necessary to understand a story. ■Rising Action-the conflicts and complications that develop a story. ■Climax-the turning point, the most intense moment ■Falling Action-the action after the climax ■Resolution-the conclusion, the wrapping up of threads.

5 SWBS ■Somebody (Who is the main character?) Wanted (What did the main character want?) But (What problem gets in the way?) So (How does the character solve the problem?)

6 Theme ■The central idea, message, or purpose of a literary work. ■The theme is different from the author’s purpose.
