Ana: Adolescent Medicine Physician and Researcher Interested in how to help teens who need help with depression get the care that they need Would help to have advice about using the internet to get teens and parents to participate in research Thanks for your help!
3
What is a stakeholder? A person or an organization who has an interest in the results of research Representing the needs and interests of stakeholders is important through all steps of the research process Goal: Involve Stakeholders
4
1) Think of a research question. 2) Design a way to answer the research question. 3) Conduct the research study. 4) Write about the research study. What are steps in research?
5
1) Think of a research question: Do teens want their parents in the room during a clinic visit? What are reasons for or against it? 2) Design a way to answer the research question. Come up with a survey. 3) Conduct the research study. Ask people to do the survey and collect it. 4) Write about the research study. Analyze your results and write a paper. What are steps in research?

1) Think of a research question: Do teens want their parents in the room during a clinic visit? What are reasons for or against it? Is this an important question? If we answer it, what can we do with the information? Is there a different question we should be asking? 2) Design a way to answer the research question. Come up with a survey. Is this the best way to answer the question? How should the survey be worded so everyone understands it? What’s the best way to order the survey questions? How long should it be? What should be asked? 3) Conduct the research study. Ask people to do the survey and collect it. What groups should we ask to do the survey? What’s the best way to ask them to do it? If we use recruitment fliers, what kind of design should we use? 4) Write about the research study. Analyze your results and write a paper. Does the way we interpreted the results make sense? Where should we send the article to to get published? Who should we share the information with? How can stakeholders help with research questions?
7
Teens who have depression Parents of teens with depression Doctors, nurses, therapists Schools Community groups Insurance Companies Stakeholders in Adolescent Depression
8
Maybe not… Depressed teens use the internet more often than teens who are not depressed They talk to strangers more often Some of their symptoms like – not being motivated to do things or not being interested in things they used to like may make it hard for them to bring themselves in Do Depressed Teens want to come to an in person meeting?
9
Social Media Interviews: interviewed depressed teens and parents about how they use social media A lot of teens with depression use social media and try to connect with other teens who might need help and convince them to get treatment, give them positive advice Depressed teens seem to want to help other teens with the same problems they have Would teens talk about depression research online?
10
Develop an online stakeholder group for adolescent depression: 2 separate groups – one for teens and one for parents Purpose: to provide feedback on my research steps and potentially other adolescent depression research My goal
11
What is the best place on the internet for people to provide feedback and interact with researchers? Do people want their information (fbk profile pic) to show up when they are providing feedback or would they rather be anonymous? Do they want the fact that they posted on this board to be visible to their social media contacts? Would people sign up to participate in clinic if I have them join the social media groups? Questions
12
First we’ll go through an example. Then I’ll ask for feedback on each step in this process.
