What are the 3 types of plate boundaries?
Journal #52 What are the 3 types of plate boundaries? Which boundary does not make magma?
2
Today we will model the 3 different plate boundaries
3
There are 3 types of plate boundaries
Review: There are 3 types of plate boundaries Divergent Convergent Oceanic- Continental Continental- Continental Oceanic-Oceanic Transform
4
Milky-Way Plate Tectonics
Safety and precautions: Clean up after yourself You only get 1 bar, so use it wisely Eat your bar only when instructed to do so.
5
The three layers of the milky way will be a model for plate tectonics today-
On your worksheet, label the layers of the Earth.
6
If you were to Cut your milky way in half… (DO NOT DO THIS YET!!)
Top layer = chocolate: breaks easily Middle layer = carmel: gooey, soft Bottom = Nougat: solid, not flexible *Fill out the table in Question 1
7
Question #2 If the earth were a milky way bar, plates of the plate tectonics would be made out of _________________ Which Earth layer is missing from the Milky way model? Question #3
8
Divergent Boundary Unwrap candy Hold bar with 2 hands
Gently push up in the middle of the bar (DO NOT SPERARATE BAR INTO 2 HALVES) Set bar down Question 4- Draw sketch of the model Question 5- which layer cracked?
9
Question #6 Question #7 Question #8
When the top layer cracks, this makes a ‘hole’ to fill in. What layer would be most likely to fill this hole? Why would there be earthquakes at a divergent boundary? In what layer would earthquakes happen? Question #7 Question #8
10
Convergent Boundary Hold milky way in both hands
Push in from the ends of the bar to force plates together. Try to keep bar in straight line The top layer should do one of 2 things: Form mountains Once chocolate layer will subduct under the other
11
Question #9 Question #10-13 Draw a sketch of your model
Which type of convergent boundary would form mountains? Which type of convergent boundary would force one plate under another plate? Which type did your model form? Which type of boundary might have deeper earthquakes, divergent or convergent? Question #10-13
12
Transform Boundary Return milk way model to original position
With fingers and thumbs on long edges, slide your right hand forward and pull your left hand back. Question 14- draw a sketch of your model Question 15- add stars along the edges where you would expect the most earthquakes to your drawing. Questions 16- Are earthquakes at transform boundaries shallow or deep? Why?
13
You may now eat your model!!!
