5 Characterization Characterization: the creation and convincing representation of fictitious characters Direct: When an author uses adjectives to tell what a character is like, it is called Direct Characterization. Indirect: When an author uses verbs to show what a character does, it is called Indirect Characterization.

9 Significant or Abstract? 1. The old and sumptuous hotel. 2. The airport looked like a laboratory for an earnest psychologist. 3. Overtly large gardens choked all summer on weeds. He looked dashing and confident.

10 Indirect or Direct Characterization? 1. She walked past him and winked. 2. She was dull. 3. He flushed the toilet and walked out the door without washing his hands. 4. His cheeks reddened when she walked in the room. 5. He was acting mean.

11 Dear Abby Letter 15 min. You are to assume the persona of one of the main characters in “Balancing Act” and write a Dear Abby letter about the problems they are having with the other character. However, the letter may only include Indirect Characterization in it. Use verbs to show what the other character is doing to create problems. As in a typical Dear Abby letter, the writing should ultimately ask for advice.

12 Respond 15 min. Assume the persona of Abby and respond to the first letter. Use Direct Characterization only. For example, “It seems as if your neighbor is self- centered, rude, and angry.” As Abby would do, the letter should offer advice.
