How do I punctuate dialogue? This lesson shows how quotation marks and capital letters, commas, and end marks are used with direct quotations. Only a person's exact words should be enclosed in quotation marks. Each individual sentence in a quotation should not be placed in quotation marks. She said, "What happened to my umbrella?“ She said, "What happened to my umbrella? It was here yesterday." When a statement is paraphrased, it should not be placed in quotation marks. She said that she didn't know what happened to her umbrella.

A sentence of a direct quotation should begin with a capital letter. I answered, "We used the umbrella last night.” When a quotation of a sentence is interrupted, the second half should not begin with a capital letter. "Okay," she answered, "but tell me next time." When a quotation ends a sentence, place a period inside the quotation marks. However, when a speaker tag follows the quotation, the period comes at the end of the sentence. She said, "It may rain this afternoon." "It may rain this afternoon," she said.
