1 Embedded Assessment 2— Writing an Argumentative Essay
Topic: Your assignment is to write an essay of argumentation about the value of a college education. Due Date: Monday when you come to class. Format: MLA Typed Times New Roman, 12 point font Double spaced 1 inch margins (do not adjust margins) Heading with your name, my name, class, date, word count Header with your name and page number Correctly formatted Works Cited page and internal citations which correspond. Word Count: words Scoring: You will type your essay into MyAccess on Monday, but I will take off points for incorrect formatting and papers that do not meet word count.

2 Embedded Quote Practice
Embedded quote at the beginning of a sentence: “Curley [won’t give anyone] a chance” because Curley is so insecure he must always be the winner (Steinbeck 27). Embedded quote in the middle of a sentence: Although Candy, the ranch hand, doesn’t appear smart, he knows that Curley doesn’t fight fair because when Curley “jumps a big guy an’ licks him. Ever’body says what a game guy Curley is. And [if Curley] gets licked. Then ever’body says the big guy outta pick on somebody his own size” this illustrates that Curley is manipulative and not to be trusted (Steinbeck 27). Embedded quote at the end of a sentence: Candy is aware of Curley’s manipulative tactics when he says, “S’pose Curley jumps a big guy an’ licks him. Ever’body says what a game guy Curley is. And [if Curley] gets licked. Then ever’body says the big guy outta pick on somebody his own size” (Steinbeck 27). Embed snippets: Curley’s insecurities lead him to fight “big [guys and lick them]” and even though he loses sometimes, he makes people take his side and say “the big guy outta pick on somebody his own size” (Steinbeck 27).

3 Citing Sources (Internal Citations and Works Cited)
Whenever you use information from sources in an essay, you must give credit to the source. In MLA, we do this by using internal citations that correspond with citation on your Works Cited Page. Example: The value of a college education ultimately hinges on the major a college student chooses. Students who choose “engineering and math degrees [command] starting salaries ranging from $38,673 to $52,200” (Marklein). Clearly, choosing the right major will increase the salary you make after graduation which makes getting a college degree a worthwhile investment. The internal citation in the essay corresponds to an entry on the Works Cited page. Marklein, Mary Beth. "Data Measure Value of a College Degree." USA Today. Gannett, 03 Sept Web. 15 Sept

4 Internal Citation 1. “He spoke to us in German and then left us behind” (Donaldson 45). 2. “I never thought of myself as proud”, says Jennings in his book Pushing the Limits of Political Journalism (107). You only need the page # since the author is mentioned in the sentence. 3. “Politics is such and interesting field” (Smith 451). 4. “Enraged how he felt after the episode” (Xavier 233). 5. In Political Guide to the United States, Xavier and Yater explore the idea that the U.S. is changing politically (544). You only need the page # since the author is mentioned in the sentence.
