1
Who is this Franz Ferdinand anyways?
2
He’s not….. A rock group from Scotland
3
He is……the archduke of Austria- Hungary. He also liked mustaches.
4
What’s an Archduke? It’s a prince. Not this Prince. He was basically the prince of Austria- Hungary. He was also the heir to Austria-Hungary throne. (That’s pretty important.)
5
So What’s this Archduke’s Story? He became one of the richest people in Austria at the age of 12 when a cousin left all of his wealth to him and said he was the next heir to the throne. As a child, nobody would have thought Franz would be heir so his education was nothing out of the ordinary.
6
Succession to the Throne Because his cousin committed suicide, Franz’s dad was next in line for the throne of Austria. He dad renounced (didn’t want it) the throne thus it succeeded (went to the next in line) to Franz.
7
Franz Falls in Love Franz met his future wife Sophie at court (she was a lady-in-waiting) but she was not a potential marriage partner because of her class. They kept their relationship a secret for 2 years! Royal figures in Germany and Russia offered up their daughters as future wives for Franz – but he said no – he was in love.
8
Marriage Franz and Sophie were allowed to marry BUT because she was not of the right social class, Franz’s children would never get the right to sit on the throne.
9
Nationalism Franz believed in nationalism for the Bosnians, Croatians, and Bohemians – but didn’t have the same feelings for the Serbians. And Bohemians are not from the Bahamas!
11
Assassination of Franz On June 20 th 1914 at 1:15 PM, Franz and his wife were murdered in Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip.
12
The Black Hand Gavrilo was part of the Black Hand – a secret society founded by the Kingdom of Serbia who wanted to unite all territories containing Slavic people (Austria- Hungarian people are not Slavic but ruled these areas). The Black Hand had tried to assassinated Franz multiple times.
13
Faulty Grenade Franz and Sophie were originally attacked with a hand grenade. It missed and bounced off the hood of the car and injured bystanders. The royal couple insisted they go to the hospital to see the injured.
14
Off to the Palace Franz’s driver took a wrong turn on a street were Princip was waiting. As the car backed up, Princip shot both royals – Sophie in the abdomen and Franz in the jugular. Both were still alive when people came to their aide.
15
Final Words Franz dying words to Sophie were “Don’t die darling, think of the children.” Franz’s aides attempted to help the archduke, but he died within minutes as did Sophie.
16
Eyewitness Account “One bullet pierced Franz Ferdinand's neck while the other pierced Sophie's abdomen.... As the car was reversing (to go back to the Governor's residence because the entourage thought the Imperial couple were unhurt) a thin streak of blood shot from the Archduke's mouth onto Count Harrach's right cheek (he was standing on the car's running board). Harrach drew out a handkerchief to still the gushing blood. Sophie, seeing this, called: "For Heaven's sake! What happened to you?" and sank from her seat, her face falling between her husband's knees.”
17
Eyewitness Account Harrach and Potoriek... thought she had fainted... only her husband seemed to have an instinct for what was happening. Turning to his wife despite the bullet in his neck, Franz Ferdinand pleaded: "Sophie dear! Don't die! Stay alive for our children!“ Having said this, he seemed to sag down himself. His plumed hat... fell off; many of its green feathers were found all over the car floor.
18
Eyewitness Account Count Harrach seized the Archduke by the uniform collar to hold him up. He asked "Is Your Higness suffering very badly?" "It is nothing," said the Archduke in a weak but audible voice. He seemed to be losing consciousness, but, his voice growing steadily weaker, he repeated the phrase perhaps six or seven times more. He was losing consciousness during his last few minutes.
19
Eyewitness Account A rattle began to issue from his throat, which subsided as the car drew in front of the Town Hall. Despite several doctors' efforts, the Franz died shortly after being carried into the building while his beloved wife was almost certainly dead from internal bleeding before the motorcade reached the Hall.
20
So What Did Austria-Hungary do? Franz was not very popular in court or with the people in Austria, so many were not extremely upset that he was dead. Also the Black Hand had killed two other world leaders so it was no shock that Franz was picked off.
21
Ultimatum Austria-Hungary knew they need to punish Serbia somehow so they created an ultimatum with a part that they knew the Serbs would not like – having Austro- Hungarian police apprehend and question anyone associated with the murder. The Serbians would not agree with the ultimatum and Austria-Hungary declared war.
