PRICIPLES and Practice in CALL Classroom
2
WHAT IS CALL? CALL is the acronym for computer-assisted language learning. CALL seems to be the most widely accepted generic term. In this foundation course, CALL will be used in a broad sense to refer to any endeavor involving the computer in some significant way in language teaching and learning. CALL - Computer-assisted language learning. 2
3
Research in CALL The researches reveals that technology dose not enhance language learning across context as much as its inspires positive attitude toward these technology in those who use it. 3
4
Principles of CALL Using technology to support language learning comprises four components: 1-The conditions that help create optimal classroom language learning environment. 2-The national ESL standards that they support. 4
5
3-Guiedlines for technology use in educational setting. 4-The NETS for technology learning. 5
6
Language Learning Environment To understand why using technology can make language learning faster, easier, less painful, and more engaging, we refer to the conditions that make language learning possible.. 6
7
Conditions for classroom language learning: 1- The learners have opportunities to interact socially and negotiate meaning. 2- Learners interact in the target language with an authentic audience. 3- Learners are involved in authentic tasks. 7
8
4- Learners are exposed to and encourage to produce varied and creative language. 5-Learners Have Enough Time and Feedback. 6-Learners are guided to attend mindfully to the learning process 8
9
7-Learners work in an atmosphere with an ideal stress/anxiety level. 8-Learner autonomy is supported 9

Guidelines for Using Educational Technology in Learning Classrooms 12
13
1.Use technology to support the pedagogical goals of the class and curriculum. 13
14
2.Make the technology accessible to all learners. 14
15
3.Use the technology as a tool. 15
16
4. Use technology effectively. Effective means that students learn language better or faster using the technology than they would have using the tools that would ordinarily be available. 16
17
5. Use technology efficiently. Efficient indicates that technology accomplishes learning goals with less time and work for teachers and learners. 17

WebQuest 18
19
In Cohee’s (n.d.) Wandering the World WebQuest for ESL students, learners are placed in teams and asked to develop an itinerary for a trip with their teammates. They are to prepare travel plans for New Delhi, Mexico City, and Beijing. Within each group, one member is responsible for figuring out what to pack, one for deciding how much and what kind of money they will need, and the third for choosing interesting tourist sites. Combining all the information they find, team members negotiate the order in which they will visit these destinations, what they will pack, how much money they will take, and what they will see. After completing their itinerary, teams write postcards home from each place they “visit.” 19
20
Integrating the national education technology standards 20 Help our language learners to achieve Help learners to meet many of the ISTE's (2002b) NETS 2for technology - literate students. Using technology as a tool can
21
NETS : It was developed to assist educators in " establishing enriched learning environments supported by technology ". 21
22
So, CALL educators share this goal of ISTE\ But, NETS require that students will be able to - Use a computer and peripherals. - Practice responsible use of technology. - Use electronic resources appropriately. - Design, develop and publish products. - Gather information. - Collaborate with others. 22
23
Also, these standards fit together nicely with TESOL standards, technology guidelines, and learning condition already noted. 23
24
There are several differences and similarities between TESOL and NETS : 1- TESOL students can use different kinds of media in their learning But, NETS students can advise them to use a computer and peripherals. 2- TESOL student learn to use language and pragmatics appropriately which might also meet the NETS of using resources appropriately and responsibly. 3- NETS goals of publishing, gathering information, and collaborating provide language learners with effecting opportunities to learn language as described by conditions and the TESOL standard. 24
25
Conclusion : - Standards, guidelines, criteria, definition – it seems that teachers have much to think about it. - The condition, standards and guidelines overlap which using technology for language learning. - condition, standards or guidelines as a foundation for designing a CALL activity might help teachers to meet many of others. 25
26
There are eight language learning conditions from the framework for discussions of both theory and practice : 1-Interaction 2-Authentic audience. 3- Authentic task. 4- Production and exposure. 5- Time and feedback. 6- Intentional cognition 7- Atmosphere. 8- Autonomy. CALL should focus on language learning. 26
