Canada at War Many people believe one of the major causes of World War 2 was the Treaty of Versailles - a treaty that enabled the first world war to end - the terms of Versailles punished Germany for starting the war by taking away land and forcing it to pay reparations - sums of money to the victors

Canada at War Hitler 1. Hitler and the Nazis were elected to power in 1933 2. Won favour of people by using the anger of the treaty of Versailles to get the votes. 3. He promised to tear up the treaty. 4. He gained power and outlawed any other political parties. He became a dictator - only ruler

Canada at War Hitler gains power, and starts breaking the treaty 1. He built up Germany’s army 2. Started to annex - occupy territory that was taken from them 3. Britain, France, US allowed these things to happen to avoid war - it was know as appeasement

Canada at War After the Appeasement 1. Germany demanding more land it had lost 2. He went after land in Poland, 3. Britain & France declare war on Germany

Canada at War By 1939, Canada was now in control of it’s own foreign policy, so it had a choice whether or not to join Britain in the war. Canada does ending up declaring war on Germany

Canada at War Canada’s Role in World War 2 Phase 1 1. Germany and Russia both attacked Poland, and agreed to share the land to avoid war. 2. The allies were preparing to defend Western Europe if attacked 3. They were attacked with Blitzkrieg - a sudden violent attack. The Allies were defeated

Canada at War Canada’s Contribution - Provided merchants marine ships to transport people and war supplies - Trained pilots and air crews - by 1940, Canada increases the role

Canada at War Phase 2 1. Germany invaded Soviet Union 2. Japan attacks USA 3. USA declares war on Germany and Japan Canada’s Contribution - Canada has success at the sea with convoys - a naval escort to protect merchant ships from submarines. - The Canadian Army was defeated twice at Hong Kong and Dieppe, France Phase 3 - Allies starting to get upper hand in the war - Allies on offence at all fronts Canada’s Contribution - the air force destroys most of Germany’s industry - Many of the soldiers fighting in Italy

Canada at War Phase 4 - Final Phase - Germany attacked on both sides by allies (including Canada) and Soviet Union War in the Pacific - After Germany was defeated, the fight in Japan became more of the focus. - USA created the first atomic bomb, and decided to drop it at Hiroshima, Japan. A second bomb was dropped in another area of Japan three days later Holocaust - Nazis were passing discriminatory laws - Holding Jews in terrible conditions at concentration camps - Hitler and the Nazis wanted a genocide - eliminate all the jews in Europe - The Nazis slaughtered an estimated 6 million jews, this is known as the holocaust
