3 Does taking into account lawyer identities, such as gender, race, ethnicity, religion, immigration status, and class, raise any issues regarding our understanding of lawyer’s role and rule of law, if at all?

4 Context United States – Many issues of equity and inclusion facing legal profession and legal system Women and People of Color underrepresented, especially in positions of power – E.g., women 50% of law students, <20% partners top 100 firms; people of color 15-20% of law students, approx 6 % partners; complex – Black/Hispanic/Asian Men of Color overrepresented in prison – Penn Professionalism Course, Fordham Class

5 For the NIFTEP Workshop Does our question have universal application across jurisdictions? – Obviously different, expect some similarities – U.K. Legal Services Board – gender, race, ethnicity, religion, immigration status, and class Does taking into account lawyer identities, such as gender, race, ethnicity, religion, immigration status, and class, raise any issues regarding our understanding of lawyer’s role and rule of law, if at all?

8 Personal Identity Exercise – Background What identities have students identified as significant in the United States? – Race – Gender – Sexual Orientation/Identity – Class – Age – Religion

9 Excercise You are attending an international conference on the legal profession. Draw a picture that explains how your personal identity group fits into that context. Remember to include both how your group, including you, experiences its participation, as well as how people from other groups perceive your group.
