What is Mindfulness Meditation? Mindfulness meditation is a technique of meditation in which distracting thoughts and feelings are not ignored but rather acknowledged and observed nonjudgmentally as they arise to create a detachment from them and gain insight and awareness.

Jon Kabat-Zinn In 1979 Jon Kabat-Zinn founded the mindfulness based stress reduction program at the university of Massachusetts. The program is used to treat patients with chronic illness. This practice is what started the interest of mindfulness meditation in the medical field.

Mindfulness Meditation in the medical field Stress is one of the primary reasons for medical problems. Stress can cause: Fatigue Increased blood pressure Higher chance of a stroke Increased danger of heart attacks Can lead to smoking, alcoholism, and drug abused Lack of sexual desire and communication. Depression Mindfulness Meditation relieves stress, which leads to: Clarity Happiness Increase of Energy Higher focus More of an appreciation for life Motivation Better understanding of yourself Better health

Meditation Facts Believed by archaeologists to have been around for 5000 years The earliest documented records of meditation was found In Ancient India in a text called Vedas in 1500 B.C.E The 1 st meditation hall created was in Japan, around 653 C.E In the 1960’s Transcendental meditation began to gain popularity in America and Europe.

The Importance of Breathing in Meditation Breathing is essential to meditation because it is connected to your mind and body. By focusing your mind on inhaling and exhaling your mind becomes absorbed in the rhythm which helps you focus. This will allow you to increase awareness.
