proto- means first proto-type (first) (mold) The light bulbs we use today have changed a bit since the first prototypes were being tested in the 1870’s. protocol, protozoa, proton

phon- means sound caco-phony (bad) (sound) Unlike the beautiful songs of many winged creatures, Larry and his feathered family announced their arrival with a cacophony of ear piercing squawks and honks. telephone, symphony, phonics

mono- means one mon-ocle (one) (eye) Being unable to read the fine print, Bruno chose to use a monocle to improve his sight rather than a pair of glasses. Unfortunately, he still couldn’t see that his mustache was developing a life of its own. monopoly, monarchy, monolith

viv- means life viv-acious (full of life) Once upon a time, an unlikely pair of vivacious travelers brought excitement and laughter to the endless expanse of barren land and tiresome routines. survive, revive, vivid

morph- means shape morph-ing (to change shape) Briskly walking down a dimly lit street, I saw a pale little girl morphing into a huge Bengal tiger and I wondered if I should run away silently or investigate her unique gift for change. morphology, amorphous

Advanced Word mono-ton-ous (one) (tone)(full of) monotonous- lacking in variety; boring because of sameness My mom promised that this road trip would be so-o-o-o fun and that we would get to see tons of interesting places. So far, though, it has been the same monotonous scenery, occasionally interrupted by gas station bathroom breaks. I knew we should have flown!
