Respiratory System
2
Respiratory system Lungs – provide the body with O2 and eliminates CO2
Right Lung 3 lobes Left Lung 2 lobes Pleura – membrane on the outside of the lung Parietal Pleura – outer layer Visceral Pleura – inner layer Plural Cavity – space b/w the 2 pleura

Respiratory tract
5
Respiratory tract Nose Pharynx Larynx Trachea Right Lung Left Lung
Bronchi Bronchioles Diaphragm Aveoli Capillaries Venule Arteriole Bronchiole
6
Two major tasks External Respiration (Breathing) – the exchange of air between the body and the outside environment Internal Respiration – the process of bringing O2 to the cells and removing CO2 from them
7
2 actions of external respiration
Inhalation – breathing in Diaphragm contracts by flattening and the intercostal muscles raise the ribs; increases the space in the the thoracic cavity and air rushes in Exhalation – breathing out Diaphragm relaxes and the ribs lower, causing air to rush out
9
Upper respiratory system

Upper respiratory system
Frontal Sinus Pharyngeal Tonsil - Adenoids Nostril Hard Palate Nasopharynx Uvula Palatine Tonsil Tongue Oropharynx Epiglottis Lingual Tonsil Laryngopharynx Larynx Esophagus Trachea
11
The throat / pharynx Three sections Nasopharynx
Pharyngeal tonsils (adenoids) – aid in the body’s immune defense Oropharynx – triggers swallowing Palatine tonsils – part of the immune system Laryngopharynx – divides into 2 sections
12
esophagus Passageway for food Part of the GI tract
Epiglottis prevents food from entering the larynx (glottis) What is the term for when food goes into the larynx instead of the esophagus? What is the procedure for dislodging food that is causing someone to choke?
13
The larynx (voice box) Air passes to the trachea
Produces sounds of speech and singing Contain the vocal cords Size and thickness of the cords determine the pitch Supported by the thyroid cartilage
14
The trachea and lower lung passages
Connects the larynx to the right and left bronchi Bronchi are the passageways through which air enters the lungs The bronchi are divided into smaller tubes called bronchioles
15
External respiration The air between the body and the outside environment is exchanged. What is another term for external respiration?
16
Terms you should know Internal Respiration External Respiration
Oxygen is carried to and from the cells. What is removed from the cells? External Respiration The air between the body and the outside environment is exchanged. What is another term for external respiration? What is cilia?
