The Circulatory System Structure & Function

Knowledge of the circulatory system – Structure & Function Heart, arteries, capillaries and veins Explore a variety of ICT systems – YouTube videos to demonstrate and support content – Interactive Whiteboard activity – Team/Group work using Wikispaces – Texting quiz

Structure Arteries Capillaries Oxygenated blood De-oxygenated blood Pulmonary Artery Capillaries in the Lungs Oxygenated blood Veins Heart

Carry blood rich in oxygen from the heart to the body (except pulmonary artery*) This makes the blood BRIGHT RED in colour Blood in the arteries is normally under higher pressure due to the force of the heart beat – Heart contracts; Systolic blood pressure *Pulmonary artery; carries de-oxygenated blood to the lungs for gaseous exchange

Tiny blood vessels that deliver the oxygen to the tissues Walls of capillaries are thin enough to allow oxygen molecules to pass through Once the blood has passed through the capillary, it has lost most of its oxygen* *except capillaries in the lungs; they allow for oxygen transfer into the blood

Collect blood from capillaries and take back to the heart Blood in the veins is DARK RED because of low oxygen levels* (this is normally demonstrated as blue in illustrations to distinguish the difference) Blood in the veins is normally at low pressure due to the heart relaxing – Heart muscle relaxing; Diastolic pressure *Pulmonary vein has high oxygen concentration; therefore is bright red

Break into 2 teams: – Team Artery – Team Vein Each team has to come up with 5 questions about the circulatory system, with the answer being something that we have learnt today Post these on the wikis, once posted, each team can access the others questions.
