Infectious diseases contribute to the large proportion of morbidity, mortality and disability in Ethiopia Call for trained human power to overcome this development menace This Needs establishment of Network University Collaboration (NUC) JU will serve as a hub in the network to support build the capacity of partner institutions

Key Components of the Activities

Overview of the project
Although there are several efforts in reducing childhood malnutrition, stunting had become pervasively high in Ethiopia. The first “1000 days window of opportunity” starting from intrauterine life to 24 months after delivery Following the Global consensus, the multi-sectoral approach of the revised national nutrition program of Ethiopia calls for nutrition sensitive intervcention.

How it Linked with the IUC Program
capacity of the JU=== >it is logical to think more at the national level and fit into the VLIR’s country program to have more a resonance/spinoff effect . This project addresses one of the thematic areas identified by the VLIR as a priority country strategy for Ethiopia, “The Health”. It is also in accord with the national strategic direction of creating south-to-south collaboration between universities in the country.

Proposed Areas/Themes of Research
1. Improving dietary diversity and Nutrient density through promotion of nutrition sensitive agriculture and aquaculture. Soil and plant zinc content and zinc status of children Growth highland fruits and backyard vegetable gardening and consumption enhancement on child health and nutritional status Effect of promotion of fish /other animal source food complementary food on child health and growth Effect of optimizing indigenous(Local) food processing techniques (fermentation, germination, blending…) to enhance nutrient bioavailability 2. Examining the effect of local production of nutrient dense complementary foods through the small scale and micro enterprises of women on child on the morbidity and linear growth of children 3. Evaluation of Addition of zinc into fertilizer + consumption enhancement on the morbidity and linear growth of children  Eexpected outcomes of these projects are enhancing Child health, growth / Child development and Survival.
