CELLULAR RESPIRATION
2
Glycolysis CELLULAR RESPIRATION Process in which 1 molecule of glucose is broken in half, producing 2 molecules of pyruvic acid (3-carbon compound)
4
Glycolysis
6
Fermentation: Releases energy from food by producing ATP without O 2 present. This type of reaction is also called ANAEROBIC: Not in air (no oxygen present) 2 Types of fermentation: 1.Alcoholic fermentation 2.Lactic Acid fermentation
8
Alcoholic Fermentation: pyruvic acid + NADH alcohol + NAD + + CO 2 Example: Yeast (like in breads) the bubbles or holes you see. This reaction gives bread a lift.
9
Lactic Acid Fermentation: pyruvic acid +NADH Lactic acid + NAD + + 2 ATP Example: Lactic Acid produced in muscles during rapid exercise when body cannot supply enough oxygen…Feels painful
10
When oxygen is present there is a different pathway followed: The Krebs Cycle and Electron Transport Chain
