COLD WAR KOREA John Nam Abraham Thomas William Vallejo Casper

Background Korean peninsula split into two after Japanese surrender in WWII Worried of Soviet intervention, US proposed joint occupation among 38 th parallel Neither side exercised complete control Kim, Il Sung created DPRK Sept, 1948

Attempts to Reunify Soviets left the peninsula, leaving military equipment at NK’s expense Americans removed troops from SK claiming Korea was not worth the cost of occupation South Korean leader Rhee, Syngman lobbied for military support in hopes of uniting the peninsula with force North Korean dictator Kim, Il Sung made a similar attempt with Stalin Both sides unsuccessful because of an unwanted war

Why Stalin Supported NK Rumors that US defense had no intent to support South Korea in an armed conflict encouraged USSR to approve North Korea’s invasion Kim, Il Sung promised a quick, painless war that would end “in three days” Stalin satisfied because a war in Korea would not directly impact the Soviet troops or people Stalin believed that Korea could become a Soviet base in case USSR needed to defend Manchuria

Korean War North Korean invasion (June 25, 1950) across the 38 th parallel a direct violation of international law Truman Administration determined to uphold UN policies Unanimous approval in UN meeting allowing global forces to convene and defeat North Korea
