“Smart pedagogy” Near term: implement Berkeley lower- division CS curriculum at U.C. Merced Longer term: implement and evaluate innovations in engineering education enabled by technology
2
U.C. Merced time line Fall 2002: some Merced courses are offered at local community colleges. Fall 2002: faculty hiring begins. Fall 2004: some engineering core courses (including lower-division CS) are offered at Merced.
3
Challenges of U.C. Merced Provide the best engineering curriculum and continually improve on it. Expand our notions of engineering instruction and courseware. Support a wide array of instructors as they implement U.C. Berkeley materials. Create a model of curriculum development, dissemination, and support.
4
Features of CS curriculum Almost all courses involve projects. Course content is cumulative. Students often work in groups. Assessments are often qualitative.
5
Technology can help with … Explicit linking and rationale for course components Tighter integration of explanations, animations, exercises, projects, assessments Support for group work and online discussions Support for reflection and higher-level problem solving
